Free tiers usually mean a crippled collector and a locked API — the parts you actually need to judge the thing. This one is the shipping product with the clock switched off.

Why it can be free
We aren't paying to store your network, so we aren't billing you for it.
Per-device pricing exists because SaaS vendors rent the disk your flow records sit on. NitroNet runs on your iron, against your storage, on your clock. That removes the cost that everyone else passes back to you — and the reason a bank or a utility can't use them at all.

The questions people ask before they trust a free year.
Is this a trial that turns into an invoice?
No. There is no card on file, so there is nothing to charge. At twelve months you decide whether a paid plan buys you something you need. If it doesn't, the free single-node tier keeps running with no time limit.
What happens to my data if I never pay?
Nothing. It is in your own ClickHouse and PostgreSQL instances on your own hardware, and it stays there whether you buy a plan or not. OTLP exports out in both directions, so you can move it anywhere you like.
Is anything limited during the free year?
Not by licence. The practical limit is the box you put it on — one node with 8 vCPU, 16 GB of RAM and 200 GB of disk sustains roughly 100,000 flows per second and polls thousands of devices. Paid plans exist for scaling past a single node, not for unlocking features.
Do you count my devices?
We can't. The platform runs inside your network and reports its hostname and specs once for licensing — which can be switched off. Nothing about your topology, flow volume or device count reaches us.
Can MSPs use the free year for client environments?
Yes for evaluation, on a single tenant. Multi-tenancy — isolated per-client data and per-tenant access from one control plane — is a Professional feature, so production MSP deployments land on a plan.
Why give away the whole thing?
Because the argument for self-hosted observability is easier to run than to read. Install it, point your exporters at it, ask your own agent why last Tuesday broke. A year is long enough to find that out honestly.
